I had an interesting realization recently, that I had passed the 200k word mark in a little over 3 months of writing. That’s not too far out of line with my normal output, but over 150,000 words went toward a free online web novel.
Yes, I finished book one in a steampunk series, and it clocks in at a far higher word count than my typical space operas. One of the reasons I barreled through it was a contest put on by Royal Road, where it’s hosted.
“Writeathon” is a biannual effort to encourage writers to produce. We were encouraged to crank out 55,555 words in 5 weeks. I was putting in 1,000+ words/day on my chapter submissions, so I figured why not toss my hat in the ring. Some quick math indicated I’d have more than 35k words by the time the deadline rolled around, without any additional effort.
The problem with that thinking is, I still had to come up with an extra 20k words or so in the time allotted. A few missed days, some good old-fashioned procrastination, and I found myself staying up late every night for the last week of the contest making sure I surpassed the goal.
Our reward was a spot on the list of winners and a free month’s premium subscription to Royal Road.
The contest did speed up my output, and I finished the novel faster than I would have, by about two weeks or so.
In other news, I was honored to be interviewed by Edwin Rydberg for his excellent podcast, Alternate Futures. I probably don’t make the best interviewee, and bad weather did not help with my internet connection, but we spent a pleasant hour or so discussing Texas, selling books, Kindle Unlimited, Royal Road, and several other topics dealing with science fiction and the future.
Back to books. Another one I finished in this time period is Lost Quadrant, fifth in the Star League Assassins series. We have prison break-ins, prison breakouts, spies, skullduggery, high technology and dirty deeds. As usual, it’s on sale for its debut at 99 cents. Hope you enjoy.
Wow! That’s a wonderful feat, Jaxon! Congratulations! 🥰 And a very interesting interview!
On other note, I was wondering I hadn’t heard from you for a long time and Booksprout sent your ARC! Lol. And then it occurred to me to come here at this App. I’m sorry for my absentmindedness, Jaxon.
I hope you are well, Jax. I really missed reading your newsletters. I’m going to move this App next to my Gmail inbox one! This way it’s in front of my eyes! Lol. Going to purchase the book now. Thank you!
Take care, my dear. Loving hugs.
