Recently at Meta’s LlamaCon, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella indicated in a conversation with Mark Zuckerberg that 20 to 30 percent of Microsoft’s code is generated by AI. According to Nadella, generative AI performs better in Python than C++.
Previously, folks at Microsoft have said they expect most if not all software the company uses will be generated by AI, hinting at a possible future with far fewer human coders than employed today.
Zuckerberg said he did not know how much of Meta’s software is being written by AI. Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai revealed later on an earnings call that Google’s parent likewise used AI for 30 percent or more for their code. So, it’s not unreasonable to presume that all the top technology companies today have up to a third of their code written by artificial intelligence, with larger percentages expected every year.
It's an interesting development to see something so science-fictiony come to fruition in our lifetimes.
